Nature of Care

Palliser Adolescent Services (PAS) is a collection of coordinated Mental Health Services for adolescents and their families experiencing mental health difficulties. The services are available to residents of the Palliser Health Region and do not require hospitalization.

Comprehensive, multidisciplinary assessment and/or treatment is offered in varying degrees of intensity. Most adolescents and families enter into a comprehensive day program lasting approximately six weeks.

Program Location and Hours of Operation

PAS is located on the lower level of the Regional Resource Centre 631 Prospect Drive SW, Medicine Hat.

Services are provided: Monday through Thursday 9 am to 3 pm, and Friday from 9 am to 12 pm.

Admission Criteria

Age appropriate to attend school from grades seven to twelve.

Adolescent and family must enter treatment voluntarily.

Adolescent and family are assessed by the child & adolescent psychiatrist and the PAS Team as being able to benefit from emotional, behavioral and/or relationship therapies.

Those experiencing mental health difficulties, which may include, but are not limited to:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Thoughts of self harm/suicide
  • Anger management problems
  • Abuse issues
  • Parent/Adolescent conflicts
  • Family and /or relationship issues
  • Major school concerns/difficulties
  • Eating disorders
  • Stress management

Exclusion Criteria

Adolescents not appropriate for PAS Services are:

  • Mandated Clients (directed by the Justice System to receive counseling).
  • Clients at high risk of being a danger to themselves or others, including uncontrolled physical aggression, running away, significant self harm behaviors and conduct disorders.
  • Clients referred specifically for: Diagnosis and Disclosure of Sexual Abuse.
  • Adolescents and parents who do not demonstrate motivation or commitment to be involved with the assessment or treatment process.
  • Clients with a primary diagnosis of Substance Abuse.
