EARLY INTERVENTION PROGRAM FOR TEENAGE MOTHERS The Young Moms Program is designed to assist pregnant or parenting individuals up to 19 years of age. WHAT WILL I LEARN IN THE PROGRAMEducation A full curriculum through Alberta Learning is provided for students to continue their education under the guidance of a certified teacher. A variety of core and elective courses are available. Practical Living Skills Nutrition, cost-effective shopping, budgeting, illness prevention, healthy leisure choices, legal issues, community resources and information. Life Management Parenting, problems solving, decision making, self-esteem, stress management, coping strategies, conflict resolution, anger management and family of origin issues. Child Development and Parenting Training Information on childcare, safety, child development and appropriate and effective child management techniques. Employment Preparation Work ethics, labour market information, effective job search and maintenance skills, volunteer opportunities and attachment to the labour market.

Why should I get involved? Pregnant and parenting teens face many challenges. This program is designed to assist you in identifying and meeting your needs through information, support and positive lifestyle choices. Who can participate? Any pregnant or parenting teen that demonstrates a need for and a commitment to participate fully in the program. Is there a cost? There is a small monthly student fee. The program is offered by the Medicine Hat Family YMCA, in partnership with School District No. 76 and funded by Southeast Alberta Child and Family Services. |
What about transportation? Financial assistance for city transit is available for those requiring transportation. What about child care? On site quality, certified YMCA day care staff provides childcare. Subsidies and financial assistance are available to cover the parent portion of childcare. |
