“Growth and development through diversity, safety and nuturing”

Medicine Hat and district area are currently able to access five alternative educational programs in School District No. 76. These programs are housed in non-traditional school settings, and all have direct or indirect involvement with other community agencies. Each program offers educational programming based on the Alberta Learning Program of Studies.

Our mission is to provide unique opportunities for individuals to grow and develop within a diverse, safe and nurturing environment.

Our programs include:

Medicine Hat Alternative High Program
Phone: 526-7877

Medicine Hat Alternative High Program offers students the chance to earn their high school diploma in an environment that is informal, supportive, and flexible. This program is geared towards students who are 16-19 years old who have the ability to succeed in an independent environment, when traditional high schools have not met their social and educational needs. In addition to academic development, students can access help with career planning, life management and self-esteem building.

Right from the beginning, students are entrusted with a high level of ownership and responsibility. The program is production based with weekly hand-ins required to maintain a spot in the program. The school is open Monday through Friday from 9:00 to 3:30pm for hand-ins and tutorials.

Medicine Hat Alternative High Program offers courses that meet the high standards of the Alberta High School Curriculum in a Distributed Learning Module format. Students enrolled in a traditional high school may supplement their program with courses offered at Medicine Hat Alternative High Program.

YMCA Stay in School Program
Phone: 526-7877

The YMCA Stay in School Program offers educational and life-skill programming to students grades 7 to 9. These students have the ability to succeed, but for one reason or another have not been successful in a regular junior high school setting.

Classes are held daily with mandatory attendance in a more flexible and supportive environment. Smaller class sizes, modified instruction, and a shorter school day are just a few of the factors that make our students more successful. In addition to academic development, students can access help with career planning, life management and self-esteem building. The YMCA Stay in School Program works as a team with students, parents, and community agencies in sharing the successes and responsibilities of problem solving. The program offers courses that meet the high standards of the Alberta Education Curriculum through classroom instruction from 9:00 to 3:00pm, Monday through Friday.
